Pest Management Transition Project

Sprayer Calibration Signup

Improving deposition within the orchard/vineyard canopy while reducing spray drift can save money and provide better pest control. We will be using a specialized instrument to calibrate nozzles and adjust vertical spray deposition. The instrument will be demonstrated at the PMTP Field Days and is also available by appointment for calibrating grower sprayers - for free. Visit the PMTP website at http://pmtp.wsu.edu/tours for more information about the Field Days. Keep reading to learn how to reserve an appointment for your sprayer.

Who should participate?

Any tree fruit or grape grower using an airblast or tower sprayer is welcome to sign up for sprayer calibration. Even if your sprayer is equiped with a computer it is still recommended that you have the your sprayer calibrated. The calibration instrument will not work with over-the-row or electrostatic sprayers, so please do not sign up if that is what you are using. While we will not restrict any commodity from attending a day, we are encouraging grape growers to participate on June 2, 5, 17 and 18.

How does it work?

The Instrument has hoses that are attached to the sprayer nozzles, which confines any nozzle output to the test system.  Spray that is discharged by the individual nozzles is carried through the hoses to collection tubes where sensors measure the nozzle output. The unit also conducts an analysis of the vertical spray deposition. The instrument consists of a 4x15 foot screen with spray collectors to catch the nozzle discharge. The spray emitted from the sprayer is collected in beakers with sensors that measure the amount of spray applied at vaious heights above the ground.

Where and when?

Online calibration registration is now closed. However, you may still be able to make arrangements for calibration before June 19th. If you would like to set up an appointment for calibration please contact Gwen at 509-788-5459.
